Yu Darvish Tosses a Near Perfect Game

It was the 24th Perfect Game in MLB history never to be.

Yu Darvish, a Japanese native with an Iranian background, almost became the first pitcher of Asian descent to pitch a perfect game in Major League Baseball. The Texas Rangers pitcher was one out from completing this feat. This spoiled the Houston Astros’ hangover after winning their first ever game in American League play.

The hitter who played spoiler was the Astros’ Marwin Gonzalez. It was a hit off of the first pitch thrown in the at bat. It went through Darvish’s legs and into the outfield. Darvish was then taken out of the game. He finished with a total of 14 strikeouts and 111 pitches in an 8 2/3 game, facing 27 batters. This is the 11th time in MLB history that a perfect game was spoiled with the 27th batter up.
