Everyone knew the United States was for real this year, but they faltered during their first game.
Although Finland has a legitimate team as well, the United States was expected to give them a beat down, but only defeated them by a score of 3-1.
Their game against Switzerland was a totally different story. The real USA woman’s hockey team showed up then. It all started with a goal by Monique Lamoureux in the 9th minute of the game. The assist came from her twin sister, Jocelyne. The US quickly striked again with a goal from Brianna Decker. In Just thirty seconds later, Amanda Kessel, sister of fellow USA Olympic hockey player Phil, netted one behind Swiss netminder Florence Schelling, giving the United States a 3-0 lead in a
matter of three minutes. Hilary Knight and Kessel closed the first period with two more goals, with Brianna Decker assisting on the Kessel goal, and the United States leading Switzerland 5-0 by the first intermission.
The United States would go on to dominate the Swiss for the rest of the game, getting goals from Lamoureux and Kessel again, thus giving her a hat trick, as well as scores from Kendall Coyne and Alex Carpenter. Expect the US women’s team to keep this pace up throughout the tournament, and the US men trying to keep up as well.
