Patriot’s Day in Massachusetts is the third monday of every April. It is a day for people to take the day off from work and school to relax and watch their favorite Boston sports teams. Patriot’s Day is also the day of the Boston Marathon.
On April 15, 2013, Patriot’s Day, near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, two bombs went off. Three people were killed, and many were injured. The effect on the city was tremendous. After a period of search and capture of the two bombers, Boston recovered and was more united than ever. the term “Boston Strong” stood as a symbol to resemble the toughness and the resilience of the great city.
The phrase “Boston Strong” pushed Boston Sports teams to win for the people of their city. The Boston Bruins made an emotional run through the Stanley Cup Playoffs before finally losing in the finals against the Chicago Blackhawks. The Boston Red Sox went from the bottom of their division the previous year to winning the World Series in 2013. Their magical run was symbolized by the iconic Boston Strong phrase and the Red Sox players’ long beards.
Exactly a year later, on April 15, 2014, many came to the site of the finish line to honor the victims and the heroes of the tragedy the year before. Four people died in total as a result of the Boston Marathon bombings: three from the attack, and one while attempting to capture the bombers. Those such as former Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and Joe Biden alike commemorated what happened the year before as the whole city of Boston joined in remembrance.
But life goes on, and the people of Boston are stronger than ever after this attack. This year, at the 118th Boston Marathon, 36,000 runners will be running. The amount of spectators are expected to double at this year’s event. It will be followed by countless people across the country, and the runners, last year’s victims, and the heroes of the Marathon bombings will have the nation’s undivided support. Some will be participating to honor an affected person from the previous year’s bombings, and others are participating to fuel the spirit of the “Boston Strong” icon, but all will know the importance of this event and what it represents. The people of Boston are stronger and more united than ever before.
