It’s East vs West this Saturday, in the IPL 7 Finals.
The Kolkata Knight Riders and the Kings XI Punjab will compete for the cup in a heated cricket match on June 1, 2014. Both teams are strong: KKR boasts strong batsman Gautam Gambhir and several all rounders like Jacques Kallis and Yusuf Pathan. These players have their counterparts on the Punjab team: Virender Sehwag, George Bailey, and Shaun Marsh (to name a few).
For those unfamiliar with the sport of cricket: don’t worry, it’s quite simple. There are two teams of 11 players. Similar to baseball, one team bats first, while the other “bowls” and fields. Two batsmen stand on opposite sides of a rectangular patch of land called the “pitch”. With a running the start, the bowler tosses the ball at the batsmen, the ball is hit out into the field, and the two batsmen begin running from one end of the pitch to the other, scoring “runs”. If the ball flies across the outer boundary of the field, the batting team scores an automatic 6 runs (a fan’s ultimate joy), and if the ball bounces across, 4 runs are earned. The batsman must, however, be cautious that the ball doesn’t hit the three vertical sticks behind him – this results in an immediate OUT. After every player from the batting team is out, the teams switch and the second half of the game begins. At the end, whichever team has more runs wins.
KXIP stands in first place currently, having won 11 games and losing 3 this season. Virender Sehwag continues to be a batting powerhouse for the team, currently holding the season record for Highest Individual Score: 122 runs. The Kings XI’s Wriddhiman Saha also holds a century-plus high score of 104. Lakshmipathy Balaji and Karanveer Singh have excelled in their bowling.
KKR has been riding on a winning streak for the past 5 games, with a total of 9 wins and 5 losses this season. This streak has surprisingly boosted them slightly ahead of the Chennai Super Kings, the anticipated finalists. Kolkata has its own powerful artillery. Guatam Gambhir, whom some imagine as the next Sachin Tendulkar, has proven himself once again by leading his team to the finals, and batting as well as usual. The Knight Riders’ batsman Robin Uthappa holds the season record for total runs: a massive 655.
This Saturday, we will see how the two powerful teams battle it out in the field of the Indian Premier League Finals. Exceptional batters on both sides will definitely make this matchup heated and interesting. Whether you see it as East vs West, Shahrukh Khan vs Preity Zinta, or just the Knight Riders vs the Kings XI, remember to tune in and watch the game!
